Sun King Rolls Out Larger Solar Systems for Kenya’s Homes and Institutions

The expanded PowerHub range reaches 30kW, giving households, businesses and public facilities more options for managing electricity needs and coping with power outages.

Sun King has introduced higher-capacity solar inverter systems in Kenya, expanding its PowerHub portfolio to 30 kilowatts (kW) as the company targets households, businesses and institutions seeking reliable electricity.

The new range was unveiled in Nairobi on October 8, 2026, bringing together customers, retail partners and government representatives to discuss demand for solar energy solutions across the country.

The expanded portfolio spans inverter capacities of 2.2kW to 30kW, allowing customers to select systems according to their electricity requirements and increase capacity as those needs grow.

The company said the systems can be connected in parallel, enabling multiple inverters to work together to increase available power. Customers can also expand their solar panels and battery storage without necessarily replacing existing equipment.

The offering targets a broad customer base, from households seeking to operate more appliances to schools, hospitals, offices, commercial buildings and light industrial facilities that require higher power capacity.

Atta Arome, Sun King’s Product Head for Solar Inverter Systems, said the expansion would allow the company to serve customers with electricity requirements beyond those met by smaller solar home systems.

“PowerHub systems are already powering offices and entire schools. This expansion is another step forward to deliver more energy across Kenya,” Arome said.

Systems designed to scale with demand

The PowerHub expansion includes several configurations suited to different electricity requirements.

The PowerHub Pro provides 5kW of inverter power, a 5-kilowatt-hour battery and approximately 2.7kW of solar capacity. It is designed to support household appliances such as water pumps, washing machines, microwaves and kettles.

The PowerHub Max offers 10kW of inverter capacity and can accommodate up to four batteries, providing a maximum storage capacity of 20kWh. Sun King says the batteries have an anticipated lifespan of 10 years under typical daily use.

For customers requiring more electricity, the larger systems offer inverter capacities ranging from 15kW to 30kW, battery storage of 15kWh to 120kWh and solar capacity of up to 48kW.

The modular approach is intended to accommodate changing requirements. Customers can begin with a system suited to their current consumption and add capacity when they acquire more appliances, expand a business or need to power additional equipment.

Sun King said the expanded systems can help customers maintain electricity supply during grid outages, reducing interruptions to household activities and business operations.

Addressing electricity interruptions

Sun King Country Business Leader Elisha Omedo Adie said reliable electricity was essential for businesses and facilities that depend on continuous power to operate.

He cited Sienna Family Care Centre in Njiru, Nairobi, where power interruptions had previously affected the clinic’s ability to manage emergencies at night.

According to Adie, the facility’s PowerHub systems now help keep lighting, essential diagnostic equipment and cold storage operational when grid electricity fails.

The example illustrates how battery-backed solar systems can support healthcare facilities that need electricity for equipment and essential services during outages.

For businesses, the company said the systems could help keep equipment running and reduce the working hours lost when electricity supply is interrupted.

Sun King is also extending its institutional focus beyond Kenya. Adie cited a programme in Malawi targeting the provision of electricity to 5,000 primary schools by 2030.

Financing and customer support

Sun King is combining the expanded product range with financing arrangements intended to reduce the upfront cost of acquiring solar systems.

According to the company, PowerHub installations are available through its nationwide agent network, with monthly payments starting at KSh15,500 and a down payment of KSh22,600.

The company said customers receive installation, warranty coverage and after-sales support, with Sun King managing the process from system design through installation and ongoing service.

Veronica Mugwanja, the company’s Solar Inverter Business Manager for PayGo, said the expanded range would allow customers to continue using Sun King products as their electricity requirements increased.

She noted that some customers who began with solar lanterns had progressed to solar home systems and were now ready for inverters. The larger PowerHub options would allow the company to serve customers moving into bigger homes, starting businesses or establishing facilities that require more electricity.

Mugwanja also pointed to potential savings compared with expenditure on grid electricity and petrol or diesel generators. Solar systems with battery storage provide an alternative to fuel-powered backup generation, without the noise associated with conventional generators.

The company said its agents and service network operate across Kenya’s counties, supporting installations and providing after-sales assistance.

Extending an established solar business

Sun King has operated in Kenya since 2007, initially building its business around solar lanterns and home systems supported by flexible payment options.

It has since expanded into higher-capacity inverters as customers seek solar installations capable of supporting more appliances and larger premises.

The company says one in five Kenyans has access to its solar products. Across Africa, it installs more than 330,000 solar products each month.

Catherine Mudachi, Sun King’s Vice President of Marketing, said the company was seeking to extend access to reliable solar power through product quality, professional installation, flexible financing and customer support.

The expanded PowerHub range places the company in a position to serve both residential customers and institutions with higher electricity requirements.

The full range is available through Sun King’s agent network across Kenya. Customers can also attend demonstrations organised by the company to examine the systems and discuss suitable configurations with trained agents.
